Intestinal ulcers are often unwanted effects for sport horses. Because ulcers are so annoying to horses, owners often take medications that provide the quickest relief, usually conventional drugs. However, these drugs block or prevent the horse's stomach acid, which disrupts digestion in the medium term. 10 to 15 percent of protein digestion depends on the production of pepsins in the stomach. Pepsin would only be produced in an acidic environment (then during the production of gastric acid). Gastric acid also fights live pathogenic bacteria in the stomach and small intestine. Conventional drugs that give immediate relief from disorders block digestion and cause long-term disorders.
